Today in AI business — November 3, 2026

Four items that matter to a small business, with sources. News moves fast and vendor announcements are vendor claims — check the linked source before acting on any of it.

1. Marvell agrees a $115 billion all-stock deal for Lumentum

Marvell and Lumentum announced on November 2 a definitive all-stock agreement valuing Lumentum at approximately $115 billion in enterprise value, with equity valued at about $102.5 billion. Lumentum shareholders would receive 4.5 Marvell shares for each share they own, a 23.9% premium to the companies' unaffected October 28 closing prices; Marvell shareholders would own about 67% of the combined company and Lumentum investors about 33%. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2028, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals — it is proposed, not closed. Both companies' shares fell sharply on Monday, Marvell by more than 10% and Lumentum by more than 15%, as investors questioned the price. The companies project more than $1 billion in annual cost savings and an addressable market of about $550 billion; those are vendor projections, not results.

Why it matters: Optical connections between machines are becoming as strategic as the chips themselves as AI clusters grow. For a small business, nothing changes on pricing before closing — but if you buy networking or cloud capacity, supplier consolidation at this scale is worth watching, because fewer independent suppliers usually mean less room to negotiate later.

2. Salesforce signs to acquire voice-AI firm Cresta

Salesforce announced on November 2 a definitive agreement to acquire Cresta, an enterprise AI company whose voice agents resolve customer calls end to end, with real-time guidance for human representatives and conversation analytics. Customers deploying the platform include Marriott, Comcast and Alaska Airlines. Salesforce did not disclose the financial terms in its announcement; The Information reported the price as $2.7 billion — a reported price, not a confirmed one. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of Salesforce's fiscal 2028, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. On closing, Salesforce plans to integrate Cresta's voice-first engine into Agentforce and Service Cloud, and says Cresta will continue supporting the contact-center and telephony platforms its customers already operate.

Why it matters: Voice is the hardest customer-service channel to automate well, and this deal brings a proven voice agent inside the largest service CRM. If you run Service Cloud, voice automation may arrive as part of a platform you already pay for — test it on your hardest call types before trusting it end to end. If you use Cresta without Salesforce, you have months before completion: check what happens to your contract and your existing telephony setup.

3. Anthropic discloses $895.4 billion in multi-year compute commitments

Anthropic's amended IPO filing, filed on November 2, disclosed approximately $895.4 billion in aggregate purchase and lease commitments, substantially related to compute and infrastructure. Roughly $447.5 billion of that total is expected by the end of 2030, with much of the remainder running through 2045. These are multi-year commitments, not a one-quarter cash bill — but they do lock Anthropic into paying for enormous capacity years in advance, on the assumption that demand keeps growing faster than prices fall.

Why it matters: The AI labs are now signing contracts on a scale that dwarfs their current revenue, which is exactly why today's prices cannot be assumed stable. A vendor locked into huge fixed capacity costs has strong reasons to raise prices, change limits, or push customers toward higher tiers later. Keep contract terms short where you can, and keep a second provider workable, so a price or limit change is an inconvenience, not a rebuild.

4. OpenAI signs four Abu Dhabi agreements for government, energy and investment AI

Abu Dhabi's Media Office announced on November 2 that OpenAI signed four agreements, witnessed by Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan alongside OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman. They cover: energy, with ADNOC and G42 subsidiary Inception42 becoming the first company in the energy sector to deploy OpenAI Frontier, an enterprise platform for building and managing AI agents; government, with a Machine-Readable Government initiative translating policies into forms AI systems can parse to assist officials with routine compliance assessments, starting with a food-import pilot; investment, with Mubadala, Inception42 and OpenAI applying AI to investment analysis, opportunity identification and risk assessment; and broader adoption, with a separate five-year Inception42–OpenAI agreement to roll out frontier AI across government, enterprise and education in the UAE. No financial terms were disclosed, and no wider rollout timeline was given beyond the food-import pilot — so this is an announced programme, not a deployed system at scale.

Why it matters: Frontier AI is moving from chatbots into regulated operational work — permits, compliance checks, industrial operations — where the pilot keeps a human responsible for decisions. That is the right template for a small business in any regulated area: start with one narrow, auditable workflow, keep a named human accountable, and expand only after the pilot proves itself.
